KIRKUI

KIRKUI is a contemporary dance performance. It explores the state of alarm and its effects to both body and mind. What happens when the alarmist state cannot be released, as new crises – both societal and personal – are constantly emerging?

The performance delves into the themes of the state of emergency in the psyche, revealing the inner conflicts of a person, anxiety and the struggle for survival. The soul screams and shouts, but is anything allowed to come out?

KIRKUI invites the viewer to reflect on their own relationship to distress and crisis, as well as ways to cope with them. KIRKUI is the final part of Mamia Company's Triptych of the psyche . In the triptych, the idea of the performance originated from a private experience, expands to general and human life-affecting emotions and dark shades of the mind.

The first part, MYKKÄ/MUTE, had its premiere in January 2023 in Finnish and English at KokoTeatteri. The second part, SURUSSA/IN GRIEF, was experienced in May 2024 at the Martinus Cultural Center in Vantaa as part of the 50th anniversary program. The work visited KokoTeatteri at that time.
